Herpes virus treatment for recurrent infection:
This treatment is particularly for those who are suffering from more than five to six outbreaks of herpes virus during year. These treatments mostly use suppressive therapy to reduce the severity as well as frequency of herpes symptoms. These treatments also help in decreasing the transmission of virus to sexual partners. It also works in eliminating transmission from infecteed mother to her infant.
Episodic treatment:
Episodic treatment is generally used for those who have a long history of herpes infection. This treatment is intended to reduce symptoms of herpes virus and infectivity during recurrences of the herpes infection. The same drugs used in primary and recurrent treatment are also included in this treatment with variance in dosage. Valacyclovir and Famiciclovir are more effective in recurrent infections as compared to Acyclovir.

Prevention:
Herpes virus outbreak is due to different triggers in different people. So it is better to take prevention as there is no cure for HSV. Similarly there is no effective vaccination available at present for HSV. Some of the triggers of herpes outbreak are exposure to bright sunlight, physical and mental stress, weak immune system and sexual intimacy with infected partner. Thus the saying,” prevention is better than cure” is literally true in case of herpes.
The mosst important prevention to avoid genital herpes is safe sex, use of condoms, abstention from sexual activity during infection, limited number of sexual partners to keep yourself away from the suffering of herpes symptoms. Then to avoid cold sores you need to have proper diet, sufficient nutrition and adequate exercise to improve your immune system. Keeping yourself protected from strong sunlight and increased water intake also prevents you from herpes virus.
